چکیده
Radio observations of two isolated neutron stars, RX J0720.4–3125 and RX J0806.4– 4132, have been made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array at a frequency of 1.4 GHz. No continuum emission is detected from either object with a 3-σ upper limit of 0.2 mJy. The data were also folded synchronously with the known rotation periods of 8.4 and 11.4 s respectively. No pulsed emission was detected. If the pulse duty cycle is small, the upper limit on pulsed emission can be reduced still further to 0.04 mJy. The best evidence seems to indicate that the isolated neutron stars detected by ROSAT all-sky survey are relatively young objects, born with a very high magnetic field.

RX J0720.4−3125 is an unidentified bright soft X-ray source which shows pulsations at a 8.39 s period and has a thermal spectrum. We present deep B and R band images of its X-ray localization. We find one possible counterpart in the X-ray error box, with magnitudes B = 26.6±0.2 and R = 26.9±0.3. The very high X-ray to optical flux ratio confirms that this object is an isolated neutron star. We ...
متن کاملSpectral and Rotational Changes in the Isolated Neutron Star Rx J 0720
RX J0720.4−3125 is an isolated neutron star that, uniquely in its class, has shown changes in its thermal X-ray spectrum. We use new spectra taken with Chandra’s Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer, as well as archival observations, to try to understand the timescale and nature of these changes. We construct lightcurves, which show both small, slow variations on a timescale of years, a...
متن کاملConstraints on optical emission from the isolated neutron star candidate RX J 0720 . 4 - 3125 ?
Deep optical B band images of the ROSAT HRI error region of RX J0720.4-3125 reveal the presence of two faint stellar-like objects with B = 26.1 ± 0.25 and B = 26.5 ± 0.30. Exposures obtained through U, V and I filters are not sensitive enough to detect the two candidates and provide upper limits of U = 24.9, V = 23.2 and I = 21.9. These new observations virtually establish that RX J0720.4-3125 ...
متن کاملEvidence for magnetic field decay in RX J 0720 . 4 - 3125
The unidentified X-ray source RX J0720.4-3125 is a candidate isolated neutron star showing evidence for pulsed emission with an 8.39 s period and a spectrum consistent with a blackbody at kT = 80 eV (Haberl et al. 1996, 1997). We show that this source is most likely an old isolated neutron star accreting from surrounding media. We then argue that unless it was born with a long spin period (Pi ∼...
متن کاملThe Nearby Neutron Star Rx J0720.4−3125 from Radio to X-rays
We present radio, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray observations of the isolated, thermally-emitting neutron star RX J0720.4−3125 using the Parkes radio telescope, the Very Large Array, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. From these data we show that the optical/UV spectrum of RX J0720.4−3125 is not well fit by a Rayleigh-Jeans tail as previously thought, but is instead...
